Mrs. Auble’s House
1984-1986
My girlfriend Britt (now wife) and I took a trip to the Finger Lakes, and we ended up in Watkins Glen. By then it was early evening and we stopped by the visitor center to inquire about a place to stay. Unbeknownst to us it was race weekend at the track and everything was booked. As we were about to leave the woman behind the counter said, “There’s an elderly lady down the block that sometimes rents rooms—let me give her a call.”
We walked into Mrs. Auble’s house and I smiled. I had been photographing in zoos and natural history museums for the past few months and here was a place that belonged with them. Ceramic animals filled every shelf and table, and the walls were covered with scenes of nature. Carpets and furniture were adorned in floral patterns. It felt like we were in a diorama.
Mrs. Auble and I became good friends, and I returned often over the next couple of years to rent a room and photograph.
